There’s a lot to take in when hearing this track for the first time and I highly recommend if you haven’t heard the track yet check out the music video with your first listen. Jim samples George Smallwood’s ‘I love my father’ while expressing his journey through life without having a father.
As soon as the beat kicks in you are welcomed with this wild mashup of Black British music with grime and R&B sounds. Jim raps over a Nokia-esc beat while talkign about making money off the phone at 16, with no dad in sight, just him and a blunt on the block.
The contrast between Smallwood and Jim’s songs come as Jim plays on the idea of where he would be had a dad around growing up, I can only imagine him listening to ‘I love my father’ for the first time and picturing his memories that were never made with him. The track could also hint at Jim’s respect for his mother and him understanding their struggles together as he grows older.
This single comes as an appetizer leading up to his mixtape – ‘Black British Music’ and boy am I starving for that main course. The perfect track that you can blast when you feelng yourself or need a reminder that you can make it through anything.
